One of the best restaurants in Rehoboth! Super deal on Thursday nights too with their Prix Fixed Menu. Food is always prepared perfectly. Highly recommend.

We always look forward to evenings spent at The Back Porch. The staff are so welcoming and kind. They really go to great lengths to provide a fun experience. Highlights include: pre-dinner Dark & Stormy, delightful but not overwhelming live music during dinner, delicious food, flaming coffee and an eclectic art collection - featuring new pieces all the time - so take a walk around the interior rooms and enjoy. Looking forward to our next trip!

We eat here every time we're in Rehoboth. Great atmosphere. Beautiful Outdoor patio. Dog friendly. No snooty attitudes. Not crazy expensive. Trying desperately to find a dish that is NOT phenomenal. I hate cucumbers and adore the cucumber soup. Lobster with blueberries. Superb. marmalade made of lemon rinds. Amazing. Drinks too of course. Lemon drop our fave. Ok orange crush is so-so. There. I found a flaw. We were heading to kaisys last time for dessert but couldn't resist key lime and as usual was excellent. We are intl foodies and this is by far one of the best we've ever eaten at.

My favorite restaurant in Rehoboth. Great service, delicious food, and great ambiance. If you go for brunch, try the dayboat scallops - you will not be disappointed.

Only had creme brûlée and coffee but it was TO DIE FOR! All the other food looked great also!

A pleasant experience! We were a party of 4 early Sunday afternoon, the place was operating normally but was not hyper-busy. One decided he'd like "steak and eggs" for brunch, something that isn't on the menu, although the components are. The chef was very accommodating, steak and eggs was produced -with a chimichurri sauce- and it looked great! The waiter was helpful and knowledgeable about the food, ask if you wonder about something. Hubs had the French County Salad w/poached egg, actually 2 poached eggs, and it was lovely. The eggs were perfectly cooked to give that nice saucy effect, on the greens it's terrific. The girls had the Torchon of Savory Cabbage. Visually it's a hot weather dish, but not as dramatic as the steak/eggs, french salad. Everything on the plate is shades of green/yellow with a colorful carrot salad for a bit of orange. Being an idiot I had no idea what a "torchon" would be, I was expecting cabbage with lump crab and avocado. It had those things, but they're in a loaf format with an avocado dressing. By the time I'd tasted and eaten the last morsel it didn't matter. The preserved lemons totally redeemed the dish, adding a tangy flavor to every bite. The dish just isn't as showy as the salad or the steak, order it with confidence that it's a fine meal. This isn't a place to go for a quick meal, it's fine dining, set back from the street, good service, food prepared with flare and skill. Enjoy!

Long wait wasn't worth it! Overpriced. Waited an hour for a table. Food was ok nothing spectacular. High prices for what it is. Service with a bit of an attitude. I found the place to be pretentious and snotty (not the customers, the staff). The place has a great reputation, but I don't get it.

I've been passing by this place for years until I went on a recommendation. Thursday night was the prix fixe menu dinner. The selections were really impressive. Sashiimi tuna appetizer was the best quality fish I've seen in a long time. I had the duck confit entree and peach cobbler dessert. I was very impressed. Great place for two. Definitely not inexpensive, but reasonable given the quality of the food and service. The only exception was the party next to us that brought their brats. The adults were perfectly content to have them either running all over the place, or crying. Tip for the waiter: Don't bring baskets of bread for the kids. Will definitely return and will hope that I don't sit near a party of imbeciles.

First time to RB and last time to the BP. Overpriced and mediocre at best. Nothing stood out to warrant the entree prices but the desserts were very good.

Very professional place. Each dish executed to perfection. Although pricy, it's worth the money. The structure of the old place slows service down, but the dishes are worth waiting for.

Pretty good food, very charming setting. Service def coulda been better/more attentive/faster, but overall, experience was fun. Rabbit ragu was very delicious and flaming coffees were fun.

Best dinner we had in Rehoboth by a mile. Quirky menu, but something for everyone. Interesting dining space. Kind of tight, but that seems to be the way it is in Rehoboth. We went on a Thursday and they had a 3 course prix fixe for $38, with a good selection of options. Will definitely return!!

It's hard for to review this place because I have never had a full meal here. I came years ago with a friend for dessert. It was probably almost 10pm but the restaurant was still busy. We were seated under steps that the wait staff kept stomping up and down which we didn't understand when there were open seats. We then ordered an espresso crème brulee which was awful! It was like brown baby food with no flavor. I had not been back since until recently stopping here on the Rehoboth food tour. We were given a glass of sparkling wine with a cool dill and cucumber soup which was fantastic. I would go back again just for the soup. The owner came and talked to us all and has owned the restaurant for years with the same employees. Because of how delicious this soup was I will give this place another shot and hope to up my stars!

Most of us who have come here since the Back Porch was THE nice place to go in Rehoboth still love it. It has a unique casual elegance, a comfortable quality void of pretense. The Back Porch menu is fairly straight-forward and they don't rotate in new items often (and by often I mean over a period of years, not weeks). They really should tighten up on delivering consistent quality and service though. The food is usually from quite good to excellent, but can at times waver and the service can be choppy though I've never found it rude or dismissive. All that said, I've always enjoyed it. The thing to understand about a place like the Back Porch is that you don't go there to completely focus onf food and presentation. It's more of a beach bistro with a French twist. That's the whole point! I realize that some folks need a very tight presentation of everything that is trendy and polished, but the Back Porch is about relaxing in a nice atmosphere. The wine list is quite good, with a firm slant towards France, with a very good selection of well-priced glasses. Oh, remember there's a little bar when you come in. Oddly, it even has a little TV. So you can always grab a glass of wine there to scope it out. [2013 update: Still solid and a great atmosphere. Ate there twice during our one week visit.]

Food was good and the menu was inventive and delicious-sounding. I had a bit of sticker shock since we just happened by and stopped in, not knowing the price range ahead of time. Although the service was OK, the staff was surprisingly gruff or sarcastic in response to our questions. Perhaps it was because we had a large stroller with 2 kids in it or maybe that is just their way. I had the chicken salad (lunch) and it was quite delicious despite the fact that I bit into a piece of bone. I guess that means they made it fresh. It had beets and asparagus. Not a combination you would expect, but it worked well. There was no kids menu and no offer made to prepare something for her. There was nothing vegetarian on the menu, so my husband had to order something with the meat removed - and the price remained the same. We ate inside since it was VERY hot. The atmosphere in the restaurant was friendly and comfortable, despite the reception we got from the staff.

I have been coming to this restaurant for over 30 years for one good reason: it is unbeatable. It consistently is the best restaurant in Rehoboth. The food is always inventive, fresh, of the highest quality and expertly prepared. The service is unparalleled. Whether for lunch, brunch or dinner, it's the only game in town, as far as I am concerned. The management and staff will make you feel like you're eating dinner in your own dining room, but the food will be better.

On a recent weekend trip to Rehoboth, I stopped into this restaurant on a whim. The decor was nice and the waitress even better, but that's where the good times ended. I love cooking and am a foodie by nature, yet the menu seemed to contain a list of contrived dishes. Not contrived by way of experimental, but contrived by way of showing off--too much. And if you're going to show off, the meal should at least be tasty. No sir. I had a hanger steak that was tough, chewy as wintry shoe leather, and vastly flavorless--not even tasting of the meat itself but of the char from its cooking. No salt, no fresh cracked pepper, no minced garlic; nothing. I could not finish the dish, even though it came out looking pretty. The bread too was hard, as was the butter to put on the bread (cold as a block of ice). I may have enjoyed the appetizer, but I cannot remember it because I was so put out by my tasteless entree. I left the restaurant hungry...and pissed as a newborn. Bottom line: Save your money and eat elsewhere! You have been warned. I've had far, far better meals in chic restaurants in cosmopolitan cities for WAY LESS than they were charging here. If you do not heed this warning, you will only have yourself to blame as you hand over your credit card and curse under your breath.

Our server Tom was fantastic, patient, kind and very professional. Pear martinis, what a treat! The crispy duck spring roll appetizer was exceptional. Halibut was very nicely done as was the crab/shrimp cake. All in all, a great annual treat. " if I could stay here for two years I would have the crab cakes", Addison, age 7.

This was our first time in Rehoboth Beach and the Back Porch came recommended. The food was okay, but nothing earth shattering. The problem we had was the somewhat arrogant attitude the waiter had, citing on more than one occasion that the chef didn't "deconstruct from the menu", and looked horrified when we asked for a sauce to go with our $38.00 steak. And when we told him that one person in our party could not have cream, he served a dish with it anyway saying "just push it aside". We expected a bit more and we're disappointed. It's too bad when you go to a restaurant where the prices are high and the waiter and chef make you feel like you're doing them a favor by being there.

My friends and I had dinner here a few years ago and remembered that they make a great coffee which is pretty entertaining as well. We had finished dinner at another place and had been walking exploring the shops when someone in our group suggested the Back Porch for coffee and a nightcap. They make this flaming coffee and while making it they put on quite a show. A great place to end the evening with that special lady! It will impress as our wives were.

Rude, condescending waitress. Excuse us for wanting a few drinks on the terrace like everyone else (although they were well mixed and the prices were great). Not coming back if that's the norm. Bad service takes the fun right out of what could be a good time.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Rehoboth. It's not cheap though folks. If you're just in town for a family vacation and the budget is stretched as it is, save your money. I also wouldn't recommend this place for young children. Great date place though. I've always had a great experience here. The food has been fantastic and the wait staff very accommodating, knowledgeable and friendly. They regularly change the menu and actually print it daily so you can bet the food is fresh. The space is a bit tight in some parts of the restaurant. I'd take no more than 6 folks there for a group to sit comfortably. They have a nice bar and the place isn't loud, but perfect level for enjoying a dinner with other diners around.

My friends and I stopped in for an early evening cocktail and some apps. While we try to get to the Back Porch for dinner at least once a season, we thought why not grab a drink. And what a drink it was!!!! We had an island concoction with pineapple, mango and a dark rum floater. All I can is yum!!! We can't wait to plan a leisurely meal at one of our favorite summer spots.

I was recently in the area for vacation, and my boyfriend and I stopped in here for lunch. It was a delightful reprieve from all the unhealthy/chain options lining the boardwalk! The actual back porch outside area was lovely, and what I saw of the inside seating looked nice as well. I had a tomato and goat cheese tart with greens on the side, and my boyfriend had a deconstructed spicy turkey burger. Presentation was top notch, and even better - the food tasted delicious too! I can see how it might get a little pricey for dinner, but I thought the prices were reasonable for a nicer lunch which we enjoyed immensely!

Went here after the beach with the family one day. Good atmosphere and the drinks were also quite good. Despite that, it seems like they try just a little to hard to make their very small menu an exotic one. Softshell crabs (do not recommend) scallops with thi noodles, goat cheese and tomato pie and a few other things. If they did all of that well or also had some more traditional offerings on the menu then this would get four stars easily if not five for sure.

My first experience at this Rehoboth Beach institution was memorable. This place has that rough and tumble elegance built on years of unpretentious service, great food and casual comfort. You enter through an alley that leads around back to the bar. An animated older crowd sipping cocktails and sharing laughs adds to the storied ambience. From here you can go to outdoor patio and balcony areas and the indoor dining room. The outdoor seating looked like a great place to enjoy the ocean breeze but since the entire east coast was in the grips of a heat wave with indexes reaching 123 degrees, no one really wanted to be seated there. We were seated in the marginally cooler dining room and the feasting began. The menu was a large selection of small plates and entrees in the style of a great European bistro featuring modern upscale dishes with classic French techniques and a smattering of North African and Southeast Asian selections, and the ubiquitous steak for the unadventurous. To begin, our four top started with some small plates to share. Crispy Sweetbreads featured sherry vinegar jus and smoked olives. Char Grilled Octopus was accompanied by a nice Chorizo and Borlotti Bean Ragout. Small bites of mozzarella were paired with pickled grapes. Each dish was carefully prepared and seasoned nicely with unique touches like the smoked olives and pickled grapes. A good start! There were some unusual entree choices from rabbit and Guinea hen to Moroccan spiced king salmon and Jamaican jerk fried eggplant. I had the Pan Seared Rabbit Loin, Confit Leg, Polenta Gnocchi with Bing Cherries and Chanterelles. The portion was huge! The loin was succulent and the confit had the aspect of a crispy pork shank. It was accompanied by pan jus which blended well with the tartness of the cherries. Very pleasing but I could not specifically recognize the chanterelles. I felt the loin needed a touch more salt and pepper but the overall dish was delicious. The dessert was entertaining in itself. They offer a tableside house coffee where the server transfers streams of flaming liquor from glass to glass without burning anyone! It was part matador and part mad scientist. The smell of singed cinnamon and nutmeg wafted throughout the restaurant. The menu was a winner too. Among the choices were a chocolate bourbon torte, a light and creamy tres leches creme brûlée, an olive oil cake, and a peach bread pudding. I had the bread pudding. It was dense and soulful, paired with a peach caramel made with dried peaches that added tartness and texture. The Back Porch Cafe is a timeless gem. Pricey but worth it. Very good portions compared to other upscale places in Rehoboth. I'd sit in the sweltering heat to eat this food again but I think I'll wait until it cools off a bit and ask for a table on the upper balcony. A cool ocean breeze would elevate the experience from excellent to superlative.

The harsh reviews regarding Back Porch are baffling as it has consistently been among the Top 3 restaurants in Rehoboth for many years along with Blue Moon, Zebra and newcomer Lupo di Mare. I was last there in July '09 where we celebrated my parent's 40th wedding anniversary and sat in the large center table on the porch (as opposed to inside -- it's not all an outside porch). The service was friendly and gracious and even the manager stopped by to say hello. The food is consistently thoughtful and creative while also locally sourced (they mention the sourcing of most of the menu items) and always fresh. Stand-out dishes include the duck breast, rack of lamb and generally whatever is the special of the day. I agree that Back Porch is pricey but for us the price / quality value equation easily justifies going back. The negative reviews are shameful...this is a Rehoboth institution and some of the petty comments are damaging to a place that so many adore.

One quarter of a piece of poorly cooked fish for $32. Exciting and a rip off. I told them the fish was uncooked and they grudgingly took it back, thew it in the microwave and returned it. Save your money. Don't eat here. Oh, yes, the waiter seemed to care less. "Best restaurant on the beach???" What, are you comparing it with hot dogs on the board walk?

The food was so-so; the service was rushed and they were super unfriendly to kids. No kids menu; the only option was plain salmon or plain fish. Really?

Great location and funky art and decor. Very disappointed on this visit. As it was Nearly 100 degrees at the beach a fruit and cheese plate seemed like a better choice for brunch than some heartier dishes. The fruit-in July-was primarily sliced apples and pears with a smattering of grapes and a scant spoonful amount of berries. When I saw the slivered each under the chunk of blue cheese I was encouraged. BUT-it was hard as a rock with no taste or juice whatsoever. The fact that no apology was given or any bill adjustment just added to the disappointment. And-don't order a watery Arnold Palmer as it costs twice as much as a glass of ice tea. The cold cucumber soup WAS wonderful.

Don't understand the previous bad reviews. Took my parents here and everyone of us enjoyed the delicious food here. The foie grass was to die for, not to mention the lobster roll. Delish! Service was great. I would come back here any day. As mentioned before, I don't understand the previous bad reviews. We loved the place!

With money tight I knew the Back Porch was going to be special to lure it's regular customers back on opening weekend after a long winter closing? I could not wait to be back in my fave restaurant at the beach for an 8:00 reservation. As a regular customer I was hustled to my table by the owner to where my guest were seated. The appetizer was very nice. I WAS HORRIFYED when my entree arrived, duck breast, as recommended by the waiter. it looked like a shingle had landed right off the roof and on my plate. Well, I thought, It would taste alot better than it looked? especially for $35. Well it was so salty ..but wait. tuff and very chewy and no flavor!!!I I quietly asked the waiter to bring me something else. What do you suggest..Ummmm "the lovely Rockfish" Sounds great I said. Well it arrived swimming in brown water? It was laying in a ...what else? ...a salty broth? A sweet delicate fish in a beef broth. What's going on with my fave restaurant??? I also had sent it back as it was inedible. ALL MY GUEST WERE very dissatisfied with their entree's. What a shame. Don't wast your money and if you go only have the appetizers. PooPoo!

Truly one of the best meals that I've had in years! My partner and I came here for our anniversary and are an indecisive pair, and so we ordered six appetizers and dessert. The home made foie gras (served with pickled fennel and tomato jam) was better and fresher than any that I've had in France...the lamb meatballs stuffed with prune were over the top...so were the veal sweetbreads with smoked olives and a sherry reduction. The eggplant and feta ravioli in a cinnamon tomato broth was a mix of Greek flavors re-invented. The only ap we'd rethink was the sliced duck breast over and inventive slaw, and only becuase my partner actually scooped up the hot sauce that was drizzled on the plate in a quantity that only Central and South Americans would be accustomed to eating. The Belgian chocolate trifle and the fresh peach bread with caramelized peach sauce were slammin'! The atmosphere was fun and casual without being family oriented (read loud screaming children) or stuffy. Our waitress was delightful, helpful, confident, without being haughty. This is the kind of place that effortlessly gets it right from having so many years of practice, while others try to hard and fail. It costs about $10 more per entree than the other decent dining spots in Rehoboth but totally worth it. We felt totally decadent by the end of the meal. The indoor atmosphere is quaint and charming if the decor is a bit lacking but we were here during the 5 day heatwave that basically made outdoor dining impossible. I would highly recommend this place, and go with a number of people who like to share so you can sample the other items on the menu...you'll want to try them all!

Food: 2 Service & ambiance: 4. I don't get the love-hate here. The place is adorable. Sitting outside is great, but inside is cute too. Location is great. Service was friendly & prompt. But the food is very, very mediocre. Not horrible, but just blah. They told me my salmon would be medium-rare, & it wasn't (well, only at the very center). It didn't feel very seasonal, although that's what it's supposed to be. And they brought store-bought crackers to the table, which I don't consider fine dining. If you're not a big stickler for food, and you want to sit outside along the main strip, then this is a good place.

The menu was promising. The by the glass wine selection was FANTASTIC. I thought, let me really splurge and allow the waiter to pair my dinner selections with wines of his choosing. Told the waiter, and he seemed enthused. It was a request so unlike me to ask, and what a no show. Selected three appetizers since none of the entrees caught my fancy. First ap: a blueberry and morel with corn coulis. Was a good bordering on very good first dish, but the clafoutis seemed almost like re-heated quiche. The wine selected was the house white, called "Whip" and a little on the sweet side. The second course came, and was the worst. The bocconcini was way overdone to the point of being the consistency of baby food. Hey - second wine choice? None - he never brought it. Third ap: I can't remember. It was honestly two hours ago and I can't remember. Had to ask for the a second glass of wine- no enthusiasm for the pairings. It was, in a word, a pretty forgettable meal except for the super dee dupery high tab for what it was: forgettable. My dining companions enjoyed the sweetbreads and the pork, but why would you ever cook good prosciutto like a piece of bacon like was done with his pork dish? The menu, the service, the execution reminded me of an 80's floral wall border: screams for attention for no good reason.

Walked through a corridor and "into" the restaurant and then realized that we were actually outside in the balmy night. Hence the "back porch" café. It's elegant and laid back; it felt good to go barefoot under the table. The atmosphere inspires both confessions and hopes...Low light, lots of wood, a few stars, milky night skies near the ocean, and creativity in the cuisine. The menu looks really fantastic but we'd had dinner already - so enjoyed dessert: fresh peach crisp, perfectly baked - with vanilla ice cream, along with rosé and grappa.

DON'T GO! Ok, so we knew they weren't inexpensive and a previous visit proved they weren't all that concerned about service or accommodating their customers, however, this visit takes the cake! We were squished into a two seat table on the porch under the kitchen window where dishes were clanging the entire time and next to the door all the servers walked in and out. The food was decent but extremely overpriced and my dining companion located a chewed piece of gum in his water, no lie. The waitress seemed horrified and offered "after dinner drinks" but of course we just wanted to leave. Then the tab came, $95 for 2 drinks, 2 entrees + app's. After flagging down the host (owner?) I said something should be done with our tab & he said he thought she was to offer after dinner drinks and I told him we passed, he then took off our two drinks we had with dinner, what a guy! I once again had to flag down our waitress to pay the damn bill and get the hell out. NEVER EVER GOING BACK and will tell everyone I know and everyone I see walking toward the place to RUN AWAY as fast as you can! HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!!

"Best restaurant at the beach"?? Come on William D, are we talking about the same place? My two cents: The concept: Inspired, but poorly executed. The food: Only decent, and certainly not worth the price. The ambience is nice--outdoors on a porch, candles, string lights, the ocean roiling close by--reminds me of evenings spent on my nana's back porch; however, diners are literally packed onto the porch, and if I can suggest anything, it's that the owners maintain the area where they seat their patrons. My father landed on the floor after sitting down in his chair and moving slightly to adjust for the tiny, cramped corner they stuck us in--WHAM! Down he went, right on his bad back! Apparently, part of the floor was missing and he'd stuck one of the (plastic) rungs of the (plastic) chairs right into it. To add insult to injury, the host/owner, didn't do anything short of replace the glass of water that had toppled over onto the table. He did not replace the cloth, he did not offer adequate napkins to clean the table, or my dad of the spilled water, and most egregious of all: He did not offer an apology. I have been to the Back Porch on a few occasions and the food is typically just ok, but service is usually at least decent enough to warrant going back. However, this time, we weren't ordering drinks (alcohol), and I think that's when we became unwelcome diners at the Back Porch. In my opinion, there are MUCH better dining experiences to be had at the beach than the Back Porch Café. Oh, and part of our dining service (both glasses, a fork, and a food-encrusted spoon) had to be replaced. None looked as though they'd seen the inside of a dishwasher in a very long time.
